When do I fertilize?

I've started many varities of canna in temporary boxes on my deck. Some of them are still only an inch or two out of the soil with no leaves unrolled yet and others are 4-5 inches tall with one or two leaves open. I planted them in potting soil weeks ago and was now thinking maybe they should have some Osmocote. Should I wait until they go into their permenant pots?

Personally, I would hold off on the Osmocote until they are in their permanent home for the season. You could fertilize the cannas that have leafed-out now with a dilute water soluble fertilizer until they are ready to plant out.

I agree with rokal; that's what I used and it worked well. Reminds me that they need another dose - I don't have time to get them into the ground just yet!
