Russian Red Canna ...and mold

| Hi All,
I took my cannas out of my basement today (stored in cardboad boxes).. and much to my surprise some of my Russian Reds have -what appear to be-cankers on them. The overall rhizome is still hard and healthy looking but some areas have black hard spots and some gray fuzzy mold. Should I plant these in the ground immediately? Or should I soak in 10/1 beach solution first? I only soak them in bleach athe end of the season..so I'm not sure if it's a good idea to do it now?
THANKS for your help!!!! |

| I would assume you have already worked around your problem, but the bleach solution would have been fine as long as the soak was for only 15 minutes (more or less). I would guess the injury you have described is a result of bruising and a secondary bacterial or fungal infection. If the problem only affects small portions of the rhizome, you would not need to have done anything as long as the growing conditions at planting time are reasonably good. Kent |
