How do I know which tubers are good?

Hi, I am kind of new to gardening and have no experience with Canna. I moved into a new home and the beds are a mess. I started cleaning one out this weekend and the canna tubers were a mass of about a foot long and 3-4 inches deep and I am not done yet. But in getting them out a lot broke into pieces. How do I know which pieces to plant and which i should discard? There are some that look white and fleshy and some that are brown. Thanks in advance!

Break apart the tubers where they will break. Plant the Pieces that have eyes (like on a potato)and white flesh inside. Some of the eyes will be a little pointed showing they are ready to sprout new growth. Discard brown and woody. Discard mushy.
