I was wondering if cannas are bothered by things collecting in the funnels shaped by their leaves as they grow out. I have some near a bird feeder and things always land in those funnels.
Water also collects in there, but I would imagine that cannas are equipped to deal with that.
as you say, in a more natural or wild setting, junk's gotta be falling from the sky all the time- bits of leaves & flowers from other plants, bird "matter", insects, etc.
