canna seed

I would love to trade for some fancy canna seed, if anyone has some to spare. Any canna with fancy striped or red leaves, or Tropicanna, etc. is fine. Doesn't need to be named variety either. I grew a few from seed this past winter and some are even blooming now. Seeding is addictive. Pls see my trade list if you are interested in trading and send me an email.

Fancy canna usually do not have fancy progeny. Tropicanna very rarely produces seed. Another striped leaved canna, Pink Sunburst, often produces viable seed but the progeny are not striped because Pink Sunburst is a chimera. In my experience, about half the progeny have solid green and half have solid red leaves, with flowers identical to that of the parent. I have some Pink Sunburst seeds, naturally dropped several years ago, germinating in the ground right now.

Sheryl, I received some seed in a trade last winter and planted about 10. There were called "Intrigue". Only one of the 10 seeds produced a dark red leafed plant. The others all came out with green leaves. I'll be happy to send you some of the seed from that plant, but can't guarantee that they will come true. Send me name and address if you would like them. Cheers,
LL

RE: canna seed

For you northern gardeners, please consider the canna rhizome over-winter in plastic covered tub in which the loosely cleaned rhizomes are placed and covered by shimmering vermiculite. Don't transplant until mid april for inside grow lamp growth if you're in northern climes as they will grow so fast they'll become too lanky and finally create more foliage than blooms. Thanks for the tip about snip 'n' dip as I now have 2 seasons of seeds to experiment with.

Stay warm this coming winter, all.
