planting canna in Fall in the South

Someone gave me a bag of canna roots. Can I plant them now (late August) or should I wait until spring? I am in middle Tennessee (zone 6b) and we don't usually have the first frost until November/December. If I need to wait til spring, what is the best way to store them? thanks!
