cannas in pots

I would like to start my canna bulbs indoors to get an early start on the growing season. Most of the catalogs state that the bulbs will be shipped in the spring around April or May. Where can I get the bulbs sooner?

You can find sellers on ebay year round that sell the rhizomes. Large Canna farms are cultivating, seprating from October until March. Plus, if the Rhizome is sent during the winter there is a possibility it could freeze durign shipment.

I ordered some cannas from Old House Gardens. They have shipping starting April 1st and you can specify your preference one of the four weeks in April.

I started my cannas middle of April in those black nursery pots and had good sized plants to put out by the middle of June. I am in northern Mass where you really can't put them out until then. They are flowering nicely now. One thing you could try that I did was to use an old heating pad on a timer under the pots containing rhisomes to speed their development.

One of our local garden centers has canna roots available in March.
