How small can you cut a Rhyzome down and plant?

OK,,, here's a bit of an odd-ball question.

I bought some ginger root at the airport gift shop in Kona, Hawaii. It looked like they just took a rhyzome and cut it into about ten pancake shaped pieces.

I didn't expect much. But hey,,, man, that little piece of root did really well. I have three nice sized plants this year.

I wonder how small we can cut a canna rhyzome down and still get it to grow. I mean,,, let's say you get this big healthy rhyzome you just dug out from the patch. Wouldn't it be way more efficient, assuming we want to grow a lot of that canna, to divide the rhyzome up and then replant them.

Has anyone experimented with this?

I think canna would a good canidate to try this on. At the end/beggining of the season seems like we have so many big rhyzoms to play around with. It's not like cutting down a 20ft tall banana tree to experiment with...
