Collecting seed?

I was wondering do you have to wiat till the seed pods are dry to collect them or can I cut the stalk and hang it upside down and let it finish drying? We have some canna's growing at work and I would like some of the seed but they are getting ready to cut off all the spent flowers.

I'm no expert. That said, I would wait as long as possible before collecting any seed. Letting it mature on the stalk would seem to be the best way of insuring viable seed.YMMV.
