Tall cannas - living tropical wall

Wanted to share some photos of 8 foot tall cannas I planted to provide a living wall around the pool. The hummingbirds have found them and make appearances daily. I've even started harvesting seeds from them recently. Wonder if it is to late to start some for next year. FYI these cannas were given a good dose of Milorganite when I planted them. This is the first year growing these so I'm not sure if they would have been this tall without Milorganite.

DP,, what kind of canna are those? I think the flowers are very unique. They look a little bit like ginger.

I'd love to have a couple of those seeds. Maybe you can set a couple aside. I'd be happy to send you some of mine.

Either way, great job on creating the "tropical look" around your pool. I can't do that with my pool in San ANtonio. My canna need shade...

This is the species Canna compacta, also known as Canna 'Robert Kemp'.

NIGHTRIDER: I have probably 100 seeds so far from these cannas and still more to pick. I'll gladly send some your way for a trade. I need some cannas that will thrive in a shady area.

WILLIAM ILLINOIS: Thanks for the identification. I got them off ebay and they were supposed to be Omega, but I didn't think they were. Love them anyway, but now I'm looking for some tall yellow cannas to add some variety.

Hey nightrider==these are the same seeds that I sent you last spring---hope they are growing well for ya! mine don't get quite that tall, as I don't normally feed them, just grow them in compost enriched beds.

Wait a minute! I see a banana trying to impersonate a canna.

I have this exact same Canna and the plants have exploded with growth. Some of it has reached about 7-8 feet tall. Anyway, I'm new to growing these and have a question. Last weekend I dug up quite a bit and have a bucket full of bulbs. Will these bulbs stay good through the winter? Should I do anything to them? All that I dug up is in the picture to the right of the palm. Nightrider, if you're interested I'll trade you some.

NUCCI60 - You are correct, that is a musa basjoo clump growing next to the cannas. Third year and growing strong.

NWMSTROPICS - What great landscaping you've got! I really love the palm. Is that a Mexican fan palm? I have a potted one and may put it in the ground next summer. For now it's on the front porch getting as much sun as possible for this time of the year.
For your cannas, I would think they would last being dug up. I bought these last year and they came in a box without anything else around them except for some layers of newspaper. Keep them in a cool dark place till planting time and you should be good. I've overwintered others in the same pots they grew in. I just cut them down once the frost killed the tops and left them in a unheated garage. Come spring, I put them outside and start watering.

DP - Thanks for the info and for the compliment. The palm is actually a Califonia Fan Palm but I can't tell the difference between it and the Mexican Fan Palm. This was the second year it has been in the ground and it has exploded with growth. I would recommend planting yours in the ground as it should double it's size by the end of summer. I'm posting a couple of pics, one shows how small the palms were when I planted them in spring of 07 and the second shows them at the end of August this year.
