My Stuttgarts are dying, help

I recieved several Stuttgarts from trades this summer. All were doing very well and had new growth. Then all of a sudden this week they are dying. I pulled up the roots - black and gooey. Will a bug cause this or did it possibly have a virus? I have 3 other types of cannas placed next to the Stuttgarts, but they are all healthy. Is there a cure for this?

Bad, that black gooey you described. Guess they must have succumbed by now - nobody wanted to repond, I think, 'cuz this is so sad!
Like any plant on Earth, cannas need water - but only enough to function (?? transpire & expirate) and grow roots. Same with the dirt the cannas are growing in. Too much water (H2o2)= not enough oxygen (o2) = death.
