I planted several red cannas on the north side of my home in Huntsville, Al. At the garden center, they were 6 feet tall. They are planted in clay soil along with some Crepemyrtles, which shade them more this year than I had expected. The ones furthest north are the tallest, about 3 feet tall, and those closest to the house are barely out of the ground, probably 6 inches tall. Like stairsteps leading to the sun. No blooms to speak of, except on the taller ones.
Think I need to move them all to a full sun location. How soon might I do that? It is still in the high 80s/low 90s here.
Wondering about the tradeoff between their currently being in way too much shade versus transplanting them while they should be growing. I suppose they won't get any worse twiddeling their "thumbs" in the shade. Probably wait till closer to first frost.
I have a nearby neighbor who I expect to be able to get a lot of divisions from. Last year she threw out a large trash-can full. But I did not know her then.
Thanks,
Jim
