Cannas blooming late this year in N. AL?

Just curious if anyone noticed whether the Cannas bloomed late this year in general in North Alabama. Mine started blooming just a few weeks ago. We had a long cool rainy spring, and that delayed the Bermudagrass green-up a lot. But it got growing well in the hot muggy summer.

I planted some cannas from several different sources last fall and also this spring in several places in my different flower beds, and mine seemed to start blooming late compared my memory of past years and also with others this year with established cannas.

The places I planted them are on the north side of a privacy fence and on the north side of the house. So perhaps they wanted more sun, delaying blooming?

Or do they perhaps just bloom later the first year they are planted?

I read mid-summer that they like lots of water and fertilizer, and I had not fertilized them at all. That might help explain it too.

It's probably no mystery to the canna experts!

Thanks,

Jim
