Spring planting of Canna

Hey folks,

I'm wondering how early you can plant canna in the spring time? I lost some canna to cold spring temps in the past so I always wait until June to replant my canna. However, I would love to get these things growing earlier in the spring to have some spring growth, get bigger plants, and get flowers earlier in the summer.

How soon do you zone 5 gardeners plant your canna? Do you plant just after the last frost or are the cold temps also an issue?

Thanks!

I usually start mine in pots in early May. They are moved in and out of the garage as the temperature dictates. They love the warmth of the spring sun, but don't like the cold nights. Then they are planted in early June. The head start gives me blooms before most folks have theirs blooming.

I will wait until after the first frost before digging them up, trimming the stems off, washing the rhizomes off, drying them slightly, dusting them with a fungicide, and storing them away for the winter in my wine cellar. I found that they don't like to be too cold in the winter, but also don't like to be too warm. So temperatures about 45-55 degrees seems to work well.

I ran into a lady at Home Depot who said she's a member of the canna society. Here's her advice to me...

she digs a foot deep hole in April for canna and dahlia, then places two rhizomes in each hole and covers them with an inch of soil. As they grow she keeps over filling them until they are leval with the ground.

This does two things. In the deeper hole it remains roughly 50 degrees f, no freezing; and by summer you have a super strong root system. No tipping over under their own weight.

Good advice, ..... as long as it doesn't freeze in the early spring. Here in zone 5, we cannot plant until all frost is gone.....and here that is June 1st. Hence I put mine in pots and transfer them in and outside daily as the temperature requires. That way I get an early start.
