Separating cannas

Newbie with probably a very basc question so please forgive me. If I want to make more plants by cutting off some offshoots, should I do it before bringing them in to be stored during the winter or after they are stored and before planting them back in the ground? Any help would be appreciated.

I wouldn't divide them until you're ready to plant next spring. Few cuts during stoage times means fewer sites for bugs and disease to take hold.
