We just purchased our first plants- and have a few questions - can they be grown in summertime in large containers and do they have to be dug up if planted in ground. Any advice for us would be great ! thank you

Canna will not survive if the ground freezes, they turn to mush.

Those in zone 7 and up can grow in the ground but zone 6 and lower must grow in containers or dig and store where the rhizomes will not freeze during the winter.

Good luck with your cannas!
