Overwintering until I find out what color the blooms are

I found some cannas on the curb on trash day. I have put them in big pots until I find out what color the flowers will be. I live in Sumter SC, the exact middle of the state.

Can I leave these outside in an unsheltered area, put them in the carport or put them in an unheated storage building with lots of windows? Water or no water?

RE: Overwintering until I find out what color the blooms are

I am amazed at how many posts there are about overwintering Canna. The plants are so damn hardy that they were the first to revive after our horrible hard freeze last January.

If they get damaged by cold, just cut the dead leaves and stalks away and let the rhizomes push up new growth in the Spring.

It's November and I've still got Canna in bloom. 49F/9.5C overnight temps just don't stop them. October rains don't drown them. They're spreading like weeds whereever I have put them.

A couple folks, neighbors, have even come by and cut out some Canna to take home and start their own Canna Managerie.

I'm about to plant Banana plants in Spring and I suspect that they might well spread like weeds too. No Overwintering required.
