Did I mess up?

I planted cannas for the first time in the spring here in NJ and dug them up this past week. I did not rinse them but got all the dirt off and cut the roots from the rhizomes (i read somewhere to do that). Now as I read through this forum, I think I messed up by cutting off the roots. Help! Did I???

no, you didn't mess up. they don't need the old roots. the only purpose the roots have are to help 'anchor' the rhizome in the ground when you plant it.

if you plant some in the spring, go back about a month later and dig one up: it will have all new and fresh roots and the old ones will have shriveled away.
