growing cannas in boggy soil

hello,
hi to everyone, im new to this site. i have started collecting cannas for about 1 year now and i have about 35 varieties. I live in Trinidad & tobago.... its in the caribbean. i have my cannas planted in small garden but the soil is clay and it is always boggy and wet. most of my cannas are doing great except for a few which seem to be very slow in shooting. i would like to know if this wet boggy soil would rot the rhizomes eventually or if the cannas could grow in it? The cannas i have are not of aquatic type. the soil never really dries out. Also i used small wood shavings/ saw dust around the cannas to keep the weeds down, would this be harmful to the cannas?
Please help me with advise,
thank you

| In general, boggy soil should be good for all of them, unless maybe the clay is so heavy that there is not enough oxygen in it. Fresh sawdust leaches nitrogen from the soil as it rots. So if you use it as a mulch, you should add some supplemental nitrogen to compensate for that. If you compost or let the sawdust rot before using it as a mulch, then it will improve the soil without first taking nitrogen from it. But to answer your question - it will not hurt cannas. Just about any organic matter used as a mulch or added to the soil is good for the soil and good for the plants that grow in it. It improves the fertility of the soil and it also loosens it. If your clay soil is anaerobic, adding organic matter will make it more aerated, which will enable better root growth. |
