I amin zone 6 mass. and I am digging mine up.It wasn't planted 'till august, but has five stems and the rhizome is huge. Iwould google the usda hardiness zone map, and if you are not in at least zone 7, I would not trust it in the ground. musifolia is too nice a canna to lose IMHO

I live in South Jersey also, down near Mullica Hill. I dig mine up every year, only the ones close to the house foundation ever survive the winter. My problem is what to do with the debris???? It doesn't seem to break down in the mulch pile and grinding in a mulching machine just makes a soggy mess and clogs the machine. Anyone have any ideas or solutions to the debris problem??

For the past 4 or so years I just cut the stalks into about 8 inch pieces and just bury them all in the hole where the canna was and they seem to decompose nicely. There is normally a piece or two of really thick stalk left over but the cannas don't seem to mind. The cannas that are put back in the holes with last years canna tops are always much taller and healthier than the ones planted in new holes without the tops. And they are all of the same variety. Also by burying the tops there is no visible hole in the ground that could be dangerous.

This year I cut the stalks much smaller into 2 inch pieces and I am hoping this will make the really thick stalks decompose faster.
