How do I over winter the tubers?

Ok I am new to cannas. How do I correctly over winter them so that they will be good to go in the spring. I am in zone 5 and I already have my dahlias put away. But what do I need to do for the cannas. They will be going into the basement. And also when is the right time to plant them in the spring. Thanks

read the post 'no canna let them die'. it will give you a couple of different methods, I personally cut the stalks off, wash em clean and store them in a cardboard box full of sawdust til summer (when I actually take the time to dig em) most of the time I leave em and cover them with about 2 feet of straw, always taking chances I am!
