If you live in a zone where you gotta dig your cannas or lose them, here's a neat trick.

In the spring, when it is time to plant them, plant them in a pot (one to a pot) and bury the pot to where the top of the pot is at normal ground level.

make sure you water well throughout the year.

In the fall, after the frost has killed off the top, grab the base of the plant and pull. The new bulbs will have filled the pot nicely and the pot and all pops out of the ground. No more messy digging and cutting the bulbs with your spade.

Separate the bulbs from the pot and store like you normally would.

I used 1.25 qt pots and they were bulging with new bulbs.

I will use 1/2 gallon pots next year.
