Are Canna bulbs safe from Squirrels

I'm planning to grow a bed of Canna next year. However there are lot of squirrels and skunks around my house. Is this a bad idea ? I can try to plant the bulbs deeper and mixed with chilly powder/blood meal. But does squirrels also damage the foliage and flowers ?

I don't have any trouble with squirrels in winter, but of course I don't have squirrels in my basement :). I don't think they bother much with cannas. The canna leaf roller insect and japanese beetles are the pests you might need to deal with.

Squirrels here don't bother with the canna when it's in the ground, but when i was digging mine up to bring in for the winter, more than a few bulbs were stolen. I witnessed the one squirrel carrying a giant tuber thru my yard. I tried to scare him to drop it, but he ran up a tree, into the next yard, and I watched him go over 3 fences with my giant bulb still in his mouth! lil booger head.

Nothing is safe from squirrels! I have never had any problems with squirrels and canna though....I don't think its one of their preferences.

I left tonnes of rhizomes to dry on my moms townhouse deck, her neighbourhood is infested with squirrels - no problems what so ever

I'm glad you all haven't had probs w/them. When mine were laying out drying, the squirrels here probably thought it was a good time to get revenge..I am forever catching them in live traps. But as john bonzo said, nothing is safe from them. They are curious lil creatures who don't necesarily eat or even need whatever they take. They are constantly undressing my goose on my front porch, and stealing her outfits..they really like her santa hat. From now on when I lay out my bulbs to dry I plan on covering them with screening.

Squirrels wont come in my yard for the dogs LOL I see them sneaking around when mine are inside, but my dogs would inadvertantly be saving my cannas when I get to plant them again:)
