What do you use to cut the stalks?

I live in a zone where it's pull 'em or they die. I'm not sure of the name of the variety of the cannas in my garden, but yipes the stalks are beefy! I used a good quality hand pruner and some of the stalks required 3-4 cuts.

Cutting canna stalks: (rated in my personal preference)

1. Machete (one handed)
2. Power string trimmer
3. Large tree lopping pruning shears

Machete sounds good, but I don't have one...

I usually use biggish pruners;
try to find a pair with wide 'jaws'.

It seems like a string trimmer would shred the stem?
