First winter w/Canna- need tips

We have some beautiful canna going crazy in our backyard.
I believe it's the Pretoria but not 100% sure. It's beautiful orange blooms with gorgeous multi-colored leaves.
The Canna have multiplied like mad, but this will be our first winter with Canna. We're not sure what we need to do & when if anything, to prepare for winter. We had a fluke winter last year with record freezing but typically our winters are not too harsh here in Southern California.
Any tips would be appreciated. Also, we are looking to dig up some (since there are a million) and plant in the front yard. Is it alright to do that this time of year or should we wait until spring? I fear if we wait, we won't have any more room where they're planted!!
Thanks so much,

OOPS- I just went to look at a few pictures; I think it's the canna tropicanna we have. Sorry!

I am in zone 7b and move my cannas in the fall or spring. Your cannas will do fine in the ground; if you are concerned just give them a little mulch to protect the rhizomes. Wow! to have so many Tropicanna...it doesn't like our hot sun so I look for shady areas to grow it. Peggy

Peggy, I'm mostly a brug and dat nut, but I planted cannas for the first time this year. Would you sell me 15 or 20 Tropicana? Jim

Jim, I do not have that many Tropicana and iVillage does not allow buying and selling on their forums. Peggy |

So I don't need to do anything to them? Do I need to deadhead them before the frost hits? The flowery part is looking pretty ragged. If I do deadhead, would someone please tell me how to do it safely? Thanks! Terra

Cannas are generally hardy to zone 7. If you are zone 7 or higher cut the stalks a few inches above ground. If you want to play it safe then mulch the canna bed with whatever material you have. If you need to lift the plants for the winter I like to sort the cannas together by type. Cut the stalks as before and work around the rhizomes with a shovel or pitchfork. They come out very easily. Wash dirt off the rhizomes and store in peat.
