canna question

Hi,
I know this isnt a good question to ask without being able to post a picture of the canna, but I believe i can give a good enough description of what it looks like. I want to know the variety. (obviously)
It looks alot like a australia. It gets about the same heigth, and it has that great burgandy colored leaves that doesnt fade. But the flowers look different. They are red but they arent the flowers australia gets. They are small and look more like the flowers you would see on a species canna.
These cannas are also very hardy. I live in zone six, and they do great. And apparently have for quite sometime. I found them back in the woods growing next to the foundation of an old house place that had fallen in long ago. So long ago all traces of the house is completely gone, and the foundation is getting hard to find. The property belonged to a friend, but he had no idea when the house was standing.
Any help on the id of this canna would be very much appreciated! Many thanks, Darla |

| Wow what a great story. I think you need to go to a few canna websites and wade through the images to determine what plant you have. The fact that the plants have come back every year over a long period of time is interesting seeing as cannas as a whole are hardy to zone seven and you are in zone six. The two websites that I check for identification are Karchesky and Paciorecznik,(perhaps others can offer you more info.) Last thoughts, my mothers maiden name was McWhinne and she hailed from County Cork. |
