Canadian Winter Sowing Container Count & Record
| | |
Posted by sharont z5 can (My Page) on Sat, Jan 5, 08 at 13:28
| The US Winter Sowing Site has a count started again this year.
Canadian winter sowers lets count our efforts!
I have have an intuition Canadian Winter Sowers have been very busy.
I'll post your starting number and additions posting totals of containers sown each day.
BTW: A container may have several types of seed so the COUNT would be the number of types of seed sown in one container!
This thread will last until the end of May as we will count the number of germinated containers as well.
Post here to this site only. Do not start a new post! From this thread I will receive emails of new starts and additions as the containers are sown.
Example:
Zone 5............58 containers.

I had such a hard time getting any activity started here so I have been hanging around at the U.S. WS forum. I really was hoping that this one would perk up soon. Anyway I did post my containers in their forum count, but will do it here too. Come on everyone, surely you have started or are preparing to start. Let us know what/how you are doing. I am a newbie and need all the encouragement I can get!! LOL My count so far: 24 containers--Z-5 (perennials and trees) |
RE: Canadian Winter Sowing Container Count & Record
| | |
I posted there as well, GL. But I thought it would be nicer to see the Canadian Zones represented somewhere else! I believe someone posted Canadian WS #'s on the US site two years ago. Sharon |
RE: Canadian Winter Sowing Container Count & Record
| | |
| I keep forgetting about the other forum but i'll go there now and post my count (12 so far). I think many of us post over there in the winter, esp. the container count. |
RE: Canadian Winter Sowing Container Count & Record
| | |
| 58 containers with perennials and biennials, zone 4a. |
RE: Canadian Winter Sowing Container Count & Record

For the Official Canadian WS Container Count, here is the first tally. (There's not much reporting? or sowing? going on!!!) Zone 1... Zone 2... Zone 3... Zone 4...58 Zone 5...94 Zone 6... Zone 7... Zone 8... Zone 9... |

| Only 4 here in zone 6 so far( several types in each container), like Wendy, the thaw has me a bit worried, M |
RE: Canadian Winter Sowing Container Count & Record
| | |
| I reported over there - didn't realize you were going to do a count here. So add 12 for zone 3. I'm not sure when i'm going to do anymore, but will let you know when i do. :) |
RE: Canadian Winter Sowing Container Count & Record
| | |
| Haven't done any yet, but am glad you are doing this! :O) I'll report soon, possibly in the next day or so as I just got my soil in and have a couple of good trades coming in. I've got the 'itch' to sow real bad too! :O) |
RE: Canadian Winter Sowing Container Count & Record
| | |
Totally anxious to get more planting done but waiting until this mild spell is over! Hoping to have more to report very soon. :) |
RE: Canadian Winter Sowing Container Count & Record
| | |
| 12 containers so far - perennials It has been really mild here and I hope they don't start germinating. I will be doing much more when it gets colder. |

The Official Canadian WS Container Count, this past week was Zone 1... Zone 2... Zone 3...12 Zone 4...58 Zone 5...124 Zone 6...28 Zone 7... Zone 8... Zone 9... |
RE: Canadian Winter Sowing Container Count & Record
| | |
| 9 more containers for zone 4a - perennials and biennials. Canadian Tire has "Gardener's Choice" seeds on sale right now 2 for $1, not a big selection, and I bought 20 packets mostly veggies and annuals. Will I have room for all my seedlings, if they will sprout? I'm working on a chart where I arranged all plants by height, with notes about flower colour, light and water requirements, to figure it out in which bed will they go. My head is spinning. :) |
RE: Canadian Winter Sowing Container Count & Record
| | |
| 11 containers today! :) zone 5 (that makes 35 altogether) |

If you know your Zone, include it in your count. Helps with easy recording! If you don't know the survival growth Zone, mention your location in the province i.e. northeast, etc. Thanks, Sharon |

| I'm not doing too much this year, couldn't get organized in time, but I have 19 containers in zone 5. |
RE: Canadian Winter Sowing Container Count & Record
| | |
Zone 4 - 21 containers for a friend of mine with my left over perennials and biannuals, and some of her 8-10 years old seeds. She has a beautiful size back yard lot, and she started doing some gardening last year, but she doesn't know much about winter sowing. The containers are still in my unheated garage because tomorrow is supposed to be -30 deg. C, but Saturday hopefully they will be on my friend deck if the weather will be like they say, -6 only. |
RE: Canadian Winter Sowing Container Count & Record
| | |
Zone 5b - I planted another 35 containers yesterday. My grand total is - 26+36=62 last week and 35 this week for a total of 97 containers. Yikes!!! It's a good thing we bought the empty lot next to us!! |

| Sharon: I have this posted on the US forum but I just noticed this count so I will post here as well. 12 containers for Zone 6A. Thanks. Ross. |
RE: Canadian Winter Sowing Container Count & Record
| | |
| Sharon, I am afraid that I have made a mistake with reporting that my zone is 5. For years I thought that I was z-5, but I came across an updated zone map for Canada and apparently I am NOT in zone 5 but rather I am in zone 6a. Please forgive me. I really am sorry, and I hope it isn't too much trouble for you to fix the list. You will have to remove 39 containers from z-5 and add them to z-6, then add my containers from today to z-6. Sorry everyone. :-( Today I got 5 more containers planted (ZONE 6a) My total so far is 44. |
RE: Canadian Winter Sowing Container Count & Record
| | |
All fixed up on my database GL. You must live in the southern part of the province. At one time I thought I was Zone 4. But looking at the old Canadian Zone Map I could see the possibility of a discrepancy because my plants behaved as if we were in Zone 5a. When the revised zone map was published I was definitely in Zone 5. Adding 22 to Zone 5 |
RE: Canadian Winter Sowing Container Count & Record
| | |
Thanks Sharon! :) Yes I am in the southern part of the province. I really had to zoom in to see exactly where I was, because I am just inside the boundary of 6a, and it was difficult to tell until I got a close up view. Here all this time I thought that I was doing so well getting some plants to grow/thrive in my zone when I was really not doing such a great thing after all LOL!! I managed to do a couple of more containers before work this afternoon. 2 more for 'zone-6' my total so far is 46 |

| I discovered today that there is nothing better to do on a day when ice pellets are falling endlessly from the sky than to winter sow. :O) 40 more containers for zone 6 please. |
RE: Canadian Winter Sowing Container Count & Record
| | |
| Eight more, please for zone 6. Wendy |
RE: Canadian Winter Sowing Container Count & Record
| | |
Please add 2 more, although one of the containers contains five newspaper pots with two kinds of poppies in them (2 of them are black peony poppies and 3 of them are single pink poppies) so does that count as two since there are two kinds of seeds in the container? (clear rectangular salad container), making the actual count *3*? |

| Wow! I am glad everyone is doing so well. I got a little nervous when I found this thread and started reading how many you all have started, but I think I am okay. I have 10 started (trees and shrubs) and now I am moving on to hardy perennials. I think I am in zone 5, but if anyone has the link to the Canadian zone map I will recheck. Thanks so much, happy sowing everyone :-)) |

RE: Canadian Winter Sowing Container Count & Record
| | |
| Yah, for sure. I've still got some annuals I'll be doing later. Did up some veggies today and I hope I'm not jumping the gun. Supposed to be quite cool next weekend. So that's 7 more for moi in Zone 1b! |
RE: Canadian Winter Sowing Container Count & Record
| | |
| Hi Sharon, I must be nuts. I have wintersown 266 different types of seeds so far. I'm in zone 3a. Some of them are inside the same container (ie seed starting trays usually contain 3 or 4 different types of seeds). Am I doing this correctly? Thanks...Heather P.S. I have only counted different seed types as per my spreadsheet. In some cases I have a few containers of the same seed type but have not counted those extra containers here. |
RE: Canadian Winter Sowing Container Count & Record
| | |
| Heather, you're not nuts! Some of us are in the same category. We are 'obsessed gardeners and seed sowers':) The WS count includes individual species of a genus. GL ealier in the season had questioned her sowings in individual paper pots in one container. One container had three different species. So your count would would be OK. If it makes you feel any better I have 348 entries in my record pages. Not all wintersown seeds, as some pots and baggies are under indoor lights in my basement and (chuckle) dining room. Lost count of how many pots are outside! |
RE: Canadian Winter Sowing Container Count & Record
| | |
| So Sharon, I'm curious. I've noticed another website somewhere that has posted germination success rates for different plants in different zones (specifically from winter sowing). I know you're tracking the number of containers that are wintersown, but I was also wondering if I should be taking this a step further once the sprouts start to pop their little heads out of the dirt. Should I be reporting success rates somewhere, or am I just turning into too much of a gardening geek by even asking that question? Thanks in advance for your guidance....Heather |
RE: Wintersown Germination Success Rates
| | |
Heather, do you presently record your seed germinations, habits, percetages, and placements? I have been keeping a yearly record of germinations but it's a 'what, where, when and how the plant grew' type of record ending with where it was planted in my garden eventually. (East shade garden, west rock garden, old rose bed garden, east hill garden or O. grass garden, etc.) I don't keep a computer database just an old fashion 3-ring binder. Each page has five seed histories of what I need to remember and ultimately record. My need for reference (memory) from year to year is imperative! I don't know off hand of a site that records everyones germination results. Perhaps Trudi has a section on Wintersown.org. I've not navigated through the whole site. Rob on robsplants.com has his own site with germination techniques and percentages but not directed to wintersown. If there is a group or site wanting gardeners from different zones to report their wintersown successes comparing Zones in order to evaluate east versus west, praires versus coastal germination, I'd love to read about it! Perhaps there are seeds that you can germinate and keep growing in your Zone 3a, Alberta, that wouldn't normally survive there! The challenge of 'micro climate gardening' in any Zone in any particular garden is fascinating! That type of information is always an interesting read. [I'm always ecstatic to grow a new seed and would love to tell everyone about it but I don't have that kind of time. I want to be outside from now until November!] So Heather, if you find a site to record your successful germinations let us know! Let the 'garden geek' in you reign!:) |

Here's my first time WS count. Zone 4 - 151 containers to date. I'm waiting on a seed order to arrive by weeks end(fingers crossed) and even though it's getting late to call it winter sowing I'll be sowing those when they arrive. As it stands I'm not seeing any sprouts yet but hearing that many others have ... gives me hope & keeps me on the lookout. But my garlic's up if that counts!!! lol |
RE: Canadian Winter Sowing Container Count & Record
| | |
| Hi Sharon, I only started keeping more detailed information on my spreadsheet starting last year. I found it helpful so I didn't unknowingly re-purchase or trade for seeds that I haven't had success with previously. I'm now recording, if I had successful germination via wintersowing and then I plan on adding if the plant itself made it through a zone 3a winter after being planted in the garden. I also track when I sowed, and what I sowed indoors or in the greenhouse. For me, it's much more efficient to do this on the computer as I can type faster than I can write and I'm already buried in too much paper in my home office. I can sort for keywords as well before I give into my temptation and order from the seed catalogues. I normally have a pretty good memory, but now I'm collecting, trading and purchasing enough seeds to garden for three different households, so I have found myself repeating past mistakes without remembering that "I'd already been there, done that" and shouldn't waste my money trying again. I tripped across a site earlier this year and will try to locate it again. I found some of the stats around germination rates in various zones very helpful as it did help me make a decision as to whether I should sow it indoors, in my portable/pitiful greenhouse or go all out and wintersow. The results were definitely interesting. Once I find that information, I will post that site here. Thanks again for all of your advice and insights....Heather |

Hi Heather I've been reading your posts here and thought you might like to check out a program that I came upon (I think it was at GW). It's called circus ponies. As this is my first season WS I found that I was ending up with notes and papers piling up as I continued to collect information as you are doing. I have started using this program now and find it allows me to collect the data in a very user friendly manner and I can even add my own photos etc. as I go along. Very much like compiling my own book. It's something I've found very useful. I'm in no way affiliated with the company. They have a website. |

| Hi Kanuk, I located the program you mentioned and everything I've read indicates it's for mac users. I'm a pc gal, so unfortunately won't work for me. I'll stick with my excel spreadsheets. Thanks for sharing. Heather |

Hi Heather and Sharon, There is a database on www.wintersown.org that has success rates by zone. It was created by members of the wintersowing forum. Hope this helps. Wendy |

| OK, it's too nice out to be sowing containers and the compost needs attention so here's my last addition. Add another 120 containers to zone 6. I know I'll be doing more but figure you might be going with Ron's May 1st date as the deadline. Just really starting the annuals. Thanks for doing this Sharon. Not bad numbers for us in the great white north, eh? :O) |

I believe dotcom this was your first post of your WS #s to the Canadian Winter Sow site. Thanks. I hope everyone is seeing great germination results from your sowing endeavours since January. If anyone wants suggestions or assistance because you didn't have results perhaps you'd want to ask questions here. Everyone has their experiences and may help problem solving. I'll keep this tally open for a couple more weeks. In case any Zone 1 to 3 people want to add more containers and for annuals sown outdoors in any Zone. Direct seed sowing is another challenge. I'm starting these today albeit a little late here. As of April 30, the Canadian Winter Sowing Container Count is Zone 1...... 49 Zone 2...... 66 Zone 3......693 Zone 4......311 Zone 5......823 Zone 6......682 Zone 7 |
