germinating hibiscus seeds

Hi,

I'm new to this forum, but have had some success with winter sowing. Has anyone had success germinating hardy hibiscus seeds? When I lived in a warmer zone my Hibiscus syriacus 'Blue bird' (Rose of Sharon) had lots of seedlings at the base, but I've not had success germinating seeds when I've tried on purpose - now that I'm away from that supply.

I hear that 'Blue Satin' is a better variety and even more hardy. Anyone have any experience with these, either plants or germinating?

I do have another question for the more experienced. How do you manage to not let the soil dry out when they are going on to the second year? I've usually kept the pots submerged in soil in a shady spot, but still have had them dry out, generally mid-summer. Is it worth rewatering them if the soil dries out completely or is this the end?

Mary
