Container idea?

Hi Canadian Gardeners,
I hope you don't mind if I stick my nose in your forum(s) once in a while. I really have more in common climate wise with you than the "lower 48". I have never tried winter sowing before but it makes sense that it would work. I like it because my living space is very limited and W.S. solves that problem. ;-)
I have a question about a container idea...Do you think it would work to take a cardboard box, line it with plastic, poke holes in the bottom, add dirt, water & seeds, then put clear plastic w/ holes across the whole top of the box. I'm almost out of smaller containers but have a limitless supply of cardboard boxes. I'll try it and see what happens. I may post this on the USA forum especially if it works! LOL

| Pam, My main concern with what you suggest would be that once the moisture starts hitting the cardboard that box will be history and will start flopping and coming apart. If it will hold up until the seeds sprout and are ready to transplant, then OK. I have known some sturdy boxes in my time. :) Did you try asking neighbours and friends for containers? Amazing how many they have stashed in their basement/garages. I simply mentioned to one guy at work the other day that I was out of 2 liter pop bottles and the next day he asked if I wanted the ones in his trunk - over 50 of them. He was on his way to the depot with them. I just finished cleaning them and cutting them and will sow away to my heart's content this evening. |

Hi tiffy, Thanks for your response. I hope lining the box with plastic will prevent the box from getting too soggy. These boxes are extra heavy duty. My dialysis fluids come in them. I do peritoneal dialysis every day, so there is an endless supply of these boxes. The cassettes w/ tubing for my dialysis machine come in a heavy plastic that's clear on one side. I've been using them to cover the containers. I've used used 4x4 pots, put them in a box, then cover the top of the box. I've used duct tape to secure it to the box. So far it's worked ok. We really haven't had any above freezing temps here; but according to The Weather Channel March 30th we are supposed to have highs in the mid 30's. Maybe I'll see some sprout action then. I can't wait! pam |
