I dunno about the rest of you guys but here in southern Ontario, it's too cold for most annuals to be "winter sown". I do most indoors but now that the warmer weather has come, I'm going to begin sowing annuals outdoors in pots with frost protection. But still not what I would call real "winter sowing".
Barb, i'm in zone 3 and have winter-sown many annuals. I started at the end of March last year and on throughout April and even into May. We often have cold weather in early May, so i do cover the containers, but all in all, they do great. I indoor sow the really tender plants and things that take a long time to mature - petunias, impatiens, ornamental grasses, etc. I would never have enough room to sow everything indoors! :)
Marcia, thanks for this info. I have just gone by hardiness info on the packets and thought that the seeds would be destroyed in our zone. Now that I know I can put them safely outside I won't bother having all my windows filled up with flats of annuals.
