Cool weather warning

Hi all,

During this cool spell in Ontario we had below freezing temps a few nights. I took my annuals in the garage on those nights, but have since been leaving them out, covered. Today I had a peek to see that some of my zinnias have been damaged. I had a few 'cream' and they are all toast except for one, and some of the leaves of the other varieties (I planted 6)have little black spots showing damage. Our temps. have been diping down to about 3-5 overnight so I guess we still have to be careful. This is my first year sowing tender annuals and I thought we were 'out of the woods'. I guess we still need a few weeks before we can plant out.

RE: Cool weather warning

I planted my tender annuals at the end of April when the weather was so nice with temperatures not going below freezing at night. Four-o-clocks, zinnias, sunflowers, marigolds and others sprouted and I kept them outside days and nights. When the cool spell started I picked the ones I considered very sensitive to frost and freezing and started to bring them inside in living room or in the hallway. Unfortunately I thought amarathus and garden balsam will make it, but I was wrong. Not a big lost because I started another batch of seeds and they are doing fine since I'm taking them inside every night. I cannot call it winter sowing anymore but the effort of taking them in and out every morning and evening its worthed 'cause I'm not good at hardening off those tender ones I baby-sit inside since February.

I planted out forget-me, I remember the garden last year with lots of them, siberian wallflower, I can trust this one too, seen with my eyes how many times those little seedling were frozen since begging of April, and dames rocket, same I trust this one as a tough one. I'm ready to plant out all the lettuces, swiss-chards and spinach but the veggie bed is not ready yet. Hopefully my plant out craving was satisfied for another week or so. It's so painful to watch that 14 day trend graphic line on the Weather Network, the next two weeks will be still below average temperature.

Happy gardening to all of you zone 6 and 5 and let's have patience two or three more weeks the rest of us zone 4,3,2,1,0!
Mariana
