new and looking for info

I want to try winter sowing. I'd appreciate any info or advice you can give me---a COMPLETE newbie. I'm going to try annual and perennial seeds---I know the perennials will need to be started much earlier. I'd really appreciate some basic guidelines--links to pertinent sites would also be helpful. We have frosts until May and sometimes a late one in early June.

Thank you.

~Geraldine (who is looking forward to winter sowing)

Check out the Winter Sowing Forum (see link below) and read the FAQ at the top of the page. That will get you started and answer some of the basic questions you may have. The person that started much of the winter sowing tradition is named trudi and lives on Long Island, New York. It is a slightly warmer zone than Canada z. 5. Remember, a USDA zone 6 is like a Canadian zone 5.

Hi Geraldine: Welcome to Winter Sowing!! Like most of us, once you start you will get hooked. Ontnative has given you excellent advice with her references to the forum and the site, Wintersown.org. When selecting seeds for sowing be sure to consult the databases listed near the end of the site. They are Excel spreadsheets which list plants appropriate for winter sowing by zone. Some annuals and vegetables can be wintersown successfully. These databases will provide you with guidelines. Good luck!!
