winter sowing lilac seed

I have a lilac bush that I bought three years ago. For the first two years I didn't allow it to bloom (I had been told by my grandmother to pinch off blooms for the first couple of years), so this year my lilac bloomed, a lot, it is now going to seed. After doing some research on here I think that I will cut off most of the seeds before they mature but would like to leave some on to mature and harvest in the fall. It sounds to me like winter sowing would be my best chance at germination so that is my plan. However I would love to hear any experiences anyone may have had trying to grow lilac from seed, is it worth the effort? And also any ideas on approximately how long the seed would be good for? should I only try to save what I would want to winter sow this year?
