Nanking cuttings. plant now??

I have read that I can take cuttings from my NanKing Cherry bush, dip them in rooting hormone, and plant them. Then I read I should keep them in the freezer ,and plant them in the spring.
I'm in Calgary, and would like to plant some cuttings before the ground freezes up.

My own experience with cuttings is:-- to cut new growth in the spring, and then dip in rooting hormone and sink into potting soil. Cuttings from the fall seldom root for me.

Our Nankings often reseed, and i either pull them out or pot them up when i see them. I've never had any luck with overwintering the seedlings, though.
