four season harvest

Hi there,
I'm doing some research for a paper and would like to talk to some Canadians who have successfully had a four season vegetable garden. I was reading Eliot Coleman's book, Four Season Harvest and I'm wondering if it's possible to use cold frames and have crops of spinach, arugula, and other cold-hardy veggies in Canada, and if so, what regions? Thank you for any help you can provide! |

I've read recently of a gardener in northeast USA who keeps his South American and African bulbs from freezing in his cold frame by using underground heating cables.
I'm sure one could adapt and grow cool season vegetables using this source of heat. By burying cable six or so inches under sand one could imagine roots are warm enough. Along with sun through the frames glass, a growing environment is established! |
