Uhm... what?

Just to let you know, it may not be sphagnum moss. It most likely be what's called carpet moss. Its a tiny moss that grows tightly together, giving the surface of the soil the appreance of green fuzzy carpet. It is rare but it has happened that spores of sphagnum moss grow from potted soil but it rare. Just in case, if the shoots start to extend in length and bulks up, it may be sphagnum moss.

HK03 It's actually very common for Sphagnum to sprout from spores. You just need the right conditions. I've had the stuff growing in my pots for years.

If you want some just spread some dried long fiber sphagnum around the top of your pots and wait. If conditions are right it'll sprout. That's all I've ever done.

I did read about a method for getting it going a little faster one time and I did try it with great success. Take some dried long fiber sphagnum and soak it until saturated with some good pure water, place it in a zip lock bag and spread it out. Blow into the bag to inflate it and then set the bag under some fluorescent lights. Try to keep it on the cool side. It did it in a basement over the winter where the temp was about 60 degrees. DO NOT put it in the sun it will cook the moss. It took about a month but several shoots began to grow.

SO Boris if you want it to grow I'd just say leave it alone. It's slow to establish and slow growing. It's taken me a few years but I have a 12 in pot that is almost 2 inches deed with healthy live spagnum. It's my "pitcher pot" so it's pretty moist and the moss gets some shade so it does very well.
