Sounds like you've been reading a book! No it doesn't have to be alkaline. They are not paricularly picky about soil media. They are very easy to cultivate and there will be a wide variety of soil media approaches by the hobbyists. A lot of people like to mix Perlite and peat. Personally, I like to mix sand and peat. Also good is a layer of LFS on top of Perlite. They just need something that drains fairly well and decent lighting.
There's a plain old moranensis somewhere in this mix of Mexican butterworts / N.A. butterworts:
