N. Spectabilis

Hi,

I got a really good report card, so my dad bought me a N. Spectabilis from

cobraplants.com.They were on clearance for 10 bucks since they were going

to be discontinued from their nursery and they did'nt have any pitchers.I read

it was a finicky plant so I was wondering if anybody has some pics or tips to

make it pitcher. If anybody has one, please post a pic or how you grow it.

Thanks,

Adrian

I saw those and was thinking about getting one. Really good deal.
Post pics when you get it!
Sorry I don't have any advice for that plant. All I can say is, that like most nepenthes that don't pitcher, give it a lot of humidity at the start and gradually lower to your normal conditions when you get it to pitcher.
    Good luck!

    Hey there Adrian,

This is a pretty cool form of Spectabilis. The leaves are a nice Burgundy (dark red) color and the pitchers look amazing. It is true that it can be quite finicky, so as theyellowdartmti advised, I would keep the humidity high and the lighting nice and bright (though not burning bright). How do you grow - terrarium, greenhouse, windowsill? Anyway heres a pic of a small pitcher mine produced. It didn't come with any pitchers so this was the first one it produced which explains the diminutive size. BTW I also picked up 3 of the 10$ Spec plants from Cobra - you can't have too many spectabilis plants :)

    Hi Daniel,
    That a nice spectabilis!
I grow my plants in a mini greenhouse in my room but since the wind blew the cover away while it was outside,
    it's just 4 racks.
On the first, there is all my carnivorous plants and a few cacti growing under my
aerogrow growlights. The nepenthes are in terrariums
On the second, I have my norfolk island pines and the rest of my cacti.
On the third, I keep my supplies and things like soil and pots. On the fourth I just
use it as an extra rack, for things that don't fit on the others.(not plants though)

    Thanks,
    Adrian

Grabbed me one of those too! I'm not sure what I'm getting into here, but I'm hopeful.

There is a thread here with more great pics and the growing environment described:

well ok, nevermind. They won't let me post a link to terra for ums dot com. There is a nice thread called N. spectabilis shot under the Nepenthes section at the site listed above.

Hey guys. I don't hang around here too much anymore, I've moved to a cooler forum. Anyways, I thought I'd share a couple pics of my Spectabilis, (not from Sarracenia NW)

I grow mine in relatively low humidity, 40%-50%, whatever the weather provides in Ohio, and as windowsill plants with a couple of 100 watt equiv. CFLs. Nothing too fancy, and it is now really starting to take off. I've had it for a couple of months now, and have been really pleased. Hope you guys are successful too!

    It arrived today!
It had alot of growing pitchers but they were really brown.
The plant arrived in great condition and any of you who are
looking for a reputable source go to cobraplant.com! They
are the best nursery I know!
DaveyJones: What are your growing conditions?I was going
to grow it in a terrarium but I'm surprised you can grow it
    in low humidity.
I'll post pics as soon as I get new batteries for my camera.
I tried taking a pic with my mom's cellphone but the plant
looks so crappy and dead since the pics it takes don't have
    good color.

    Thanks,
    Adrian
