re-potted ventricosa

So, after being frustrated with the growth of my n. ventricosa in a peat moss/perlite mix I yanked (not literally) the sucker out of the pot and brushed off most of the surrounding soil. Found that the root mass was very small. I probably didn't need to do the original re-pot that I did when I first got it, now that I think about it. So, all I had on hand was some medium grade orchid bark and some long fibered sphagnum that I basically layered into the pot with the plant. Have I totally doomed it? I'm hoping the more open mix will help it bounce back. It also had an issue with fungus gnats that I'm worried destroyed much of the root system. Thanks!
