Full Sun?

Full sun, media is a mixture of peat and sand toped with LFS. Watered only with distilled, rain or well water. No fertilizer. Traps are active and appear to be eating well and often, even those lying down. It has also grown in size overall.

Usually long floppy petioles is a sign of low light, but the traps are usually small or unformed in Flytraps that are starved of light. These traps are well formed and working from your description. What is the temperature there and how much water are you giving the plant? Did you expose it to any chemicals? Did the place you bought it from expose it to any chemicals or fertilizers?

In any case, each Flytrap will grow differently as you surmised. Some produce red only on the inside of the leaf and some have red on the inside and outside of the leaf, some have long cilia and some have short triangular cilia. I suppose some produce longer floppy petioles than others. Mine makes stout short petioles that stand up during spring and summer.

You can see the differences in the teeth, trap color, trap structure, petiole length, and even in the number of cilia and trigger hairs in individual leaves in the same plant.

Just in case, double check environmental considerations just to make sure as long, weak petioles are often a sign of light deficiency or some anomaly.

You know, I looked at my VFT's and one cup-full looks exactly like that. Another has petioles about an inch wide and traps the size of half dollars, with 4-5 trigger hairs on each pad! but, no red pigment. The former has red traps and thin dinky petioles. Both are in exactly the same conditions (full sun all day) with the same mix (Peat/perlite/sand/LFS). Perhaps its just genetics.

It is normal for typical to have prostrate summer leaves. That is they are long and lay flat on the media. Mine do it (although not quite so flat) and they are very healthy.

I would look at how the newest of leaves are forming, instead of how the oldest ones look. If the new ones are doing well, then you have decent conditions. Too much tweaking can be detrimental.
