Use cutting with at least 3-4 leaf nodes. You can plant these right away. I make the cuts at a 45 degree angle. Keep the soil moist but NOT soggy (no water tray!) and in bright INDIRECT Sunlight. It's that easy.

Another approach is to place a cutting in a water vase.

I have done both, the 3 cuttings I had each had 4-6 leaf nodes, I cut the leaves in half (as recommended) and had them in water for several weeks before they formed visable roots and new terminal growth. I then put them in soil, kept it moist, and within a week and a half, the previously green leaves browned and when I removed them from the soil, the roots had disappeared. I have since cut off some of the browned leaves and made the cutting shorter and replaced them in water. What else can i try?

Roots formed in water are very brittle and break off when planted in soil. You are better off just planting the cuttings in soil and keeping the medium moist. When you use water then plant in soil the rooting process begins again so it is usually just a waste of time to start in water.

It just reacted to a radical change in conditions. Instead of removing the plant, you could add media and let it settle in. Then remove the plug and place in a pot to minimize root disturbance.
