Bog garden dressing

Hi folks.

I have a bog garden with Venus flytraps and American pitchers. Its soil is all sphagnum peat and I put a one inch layer of long fiber sphagnum on top as a dressing to help insulate the soil underneath. It has worked wonderfully so far.

My question is about a new bog garden I've planted which contains a variety of pygmy sundews. The soil is 2 parts sand 1 part sphagnum peat. I currently have the 1 inch layer of long fiber sphagnum, but I'm wondering if this is going to prohibit the spread of the sundews. Would I be better off removing the long fiber sphagnum for this bog garden?

Generally speaking, LFS is not used for pygmy sundews. You have it right with the sand and peat. My concern is what you will do in the winter. Even if you are from SE PA, it's going to get too cold for them, if they are left outside.
