compact, fluorescent screw-in bulbs for cps?

Hi folks.

I've looked around this forum for awhile, but this is my first post. I have a question about lighting.

Around the house, I've switched most incandescent light bulbs to fluorescent . . . and I'm wondering if anybody's had this work well for cps. I've had great luck with 48 inch shop lights, but sometimes one plant will need a little "boost" for optimal color, or I'll want to use something relatively elegant (like an attractive clip or table lamp) to spotlight the plant and provide light. I'm not a believer in incandescent grow lights, but I've had good luck with using compact fluorescent bulbs for aquarium plants.

What have your experiences been?

I think they're great and my plants love them. I've never broken one. Mine are in hanging fixtures with shades so they don't get bumped at all. Mine don't get very hot but then maybe they are lower wattage than what some use.

That is incorrect. These are the only things I use for my indoor CPs. They do not get too hot at all, they are actually a fairly cool burning light, and I get the highest wattage I can find. I use them also on my frog tanks, which need a cool burning light. Any other type will get way too hot. I have tried those "grow lights" and they don't work nearly as well. In my opinion, these bulbs are the only way to go.

They will get hot but not nearly as hot as incandescents. I have not found them too be any more fragile than any other light bulb. If they worked well for your aquarium plants, there should be no problem with cp's
