Are Cephalotus hard to grow?

I got a cephalotus on eBay, but it died after I transplanted it. But I see many people taking them out of the soil, to bare clean roots to propagate them. So how do they do this if they are so sensitive to root disturbance?

How do I take the plant from dirty soil, and clean the roots and transplant them in new soil without getting them seriously damage?
