Nepenthes in Lowes cube... ID? + grab Sarracenia too?

Hi

I have some Pinguiculas and Droseras... I grabbed for 5$ a Nepenthes at lowes - a plexi cube from Botanical wonders. I wonder if anyone could identify what specie is it so I can find the best way to care.

I have shop lights and CFL and south window sill. I keep my other CP in pots with peat moss in a tray with distilled water. should the Nepenthes be drier.

also they had some Sarracenia purpureas.is it realistic to grow them in an apt in the North East? I could keep it outside on my window ledge in the summer.

What is the best Sarracenia fro my situation?

thanks

stefano

The purpureas should do fine where you are, the other sarrs would need protection. Not sure which Nep that is but it's very nice!

Thanks. Is the S. purpurea a really slow grower? The ones I saw at Lowes are pretty small. Also I live in an apt. so I kind of wanted to keep it indoor with my other CB [Ping. + Droseras]. maybe could keep it outside in the summer.
It would be hard to give cool temps in the winter. Is dormancy required?
    thanks
Does anyone have any idea about the Nepenthes I got?

Purpurea is an outdoor plant and needs full sun. It can go the the fridge sometime in late Oct./early Nov.

Yes, it's sort of a slow grower but DOES grow a number of new pitchers each year IF grown properly. I.E., full Sun, dormancy period (3-4 months).

is there any Sarracenia that is more adaptable to apt conditions and that does not require dormancy?

Sarracenias and VFT's alike are truly outdoor plants.

Your nepenthes is most likely ventrata. It doesn't like wet feet. I water mine with a spray bottle at about five pumps twice a day. That's all the water it gets. I made the mistake of keeping it in a water tray but it didn't do well. Shop lights will do fine. That's what I use.

Thanks taz. do you use distilled water when you spray? do you have any photos of yours? mine is in sphagnum moss. is that ok or should I use a mix with perlite and moss?

Yes I do use distilled or RO water. It should be fine in the original sphagnum for up to a year. I do have pictures but they are not very impressive. It was sick and lost most of the pitchers but is making a comeback now. It has new pitchers forming and one has opened but it is very small(about 3/4"). It still has one large pitcher in good shape(1 3/4"). I will upload the picture if you really want to see it.

Your mix is fine. There are a bazillion recipes and opinions for Neps. A lot of people do mix perlite and peat. The common denominator is to provide an "airy mix". Orchid bark and pine needles are also good media.

right now is in sphagnum it came with... would wait to repot until it grows a bit... the orchid bar mix i have might be too coarse and chuncky for such a small plant. could try to crush it a bit with a hammer.

how fast do nepenthes ventrata grow? could it be a ventricosa? there is no red rim on the pitcher

Hey Stefano since all sprayers are not the same let me tell you a better way to gauge the amount of water your plant will use. When you water the next time put a tray under it that will hold 1/2 cup of water. Then dump 1/2 cup water on the media. Come back in one hour and dump the tray in that empty half cup. That should give you a good idea as to how much water to give it. Another way to tell if you are watering enough is that if more than a couple of strands of the sphagnum has turned off white or dried out then give it a little more. A couple dry strands of LFS is good but the entire top of the media drying out is bad. I'm curious as to what the round balls are that you have in the pot with your plant?

    thanks
those balls are hydroton pellets. have some orchids in S/H.
just wanted to add some weight to the pot and probably they realase some humidity...
it should be ok as they are neutral.

if i mist the leaves of the Nepenthes with reg tap water is it OK?
would like to avoid to have a separate misting bottle with just purified water

No don't mist any CP with tap water. Salts and minerals would build up over time which would kill the plant eventually. The hydroton pellets may be ok for a short while but I wouldn,t use them for the same reason we CP enthusiasts don't use clay pots. Minerals and salts will build up in them over time.
