Traps will grow low to the soil instead up upwards. What zone are you in?

Here's a pic of my VFTs about two months after I brought them inside and put them in a basement window for the winter. They had pretty much gone dormant outside in late September, thanks to daylength falling below 12 hours and nighttime lows frequently in the 30's F in my Zone 3 climate.

In the basement, until recently they had warmer temperatures than outside (steady around 60F) but low light levels (some sun, some bright south-facing sky) so they stayed dormant. Now we are getting our first real taste of winter (3 degrees F outside), and the windowledge temperature where the plants are located has fallen to 50 degrees F. During winter's nastiest weather, we drop to around -30F outside, so the windowledge temperature can get well below the current 50F.

Anyway, not the perfect setup, but it's worked okay for me for many years. In the picture below you can see the remaining big summer traps from August and early September (clip off any that die), plus the rosette of much smaller flat-laying winter traps that has formed since late-September. You want your plant to be slowly producing these winter traps until it is time to begin new growth in the spring. 3 months should do it, I end up having to go much longer because I can't put the plants back outside until May.

beautiful traps! I just got an all green trap from home depot, they had tons of them and their traps were humongous
