New plants being sold at Lowes in Arizona

Hi Everybody.

Well, this post will be the ones that live in Maricopa county of Arizona and maybe also Tucson. I don’t know for the rest of the state but this could also affect California.

Anyways… when I went to Lowes to buy new light fluorescent light bulbs at Lowes, I decided to visit the nursery section just to see what they might be selling today. Lo and behold, from Gubler Orchids, they were selling a new batch of Pinguiculas.
Mexican Pinguicula from Gubler

The plants are the long thin leaves variety of Mexican pings but they seem to be two types, P. gypsicola and possibly the larger P. medusina if its not P. moctezumae. I’m not sure if they are selling the two varieties, the only way to know is when they flowers. Either way, I bought the two looking varieties and hope I did purchase two species.

For now I'll be call them Type 1& 2 until I can identified them. This is type 1.

And type 2. See the difference?

Also purchase S. ‘Cobra Nest’, also from Gubler Orchids at Lowes that day.

The media of my 'Cobra Nest' was covered on top with ornamental green moss, removed it immediately. I beats me why Gubler did that.

My new plant to replace the one that I purchase in LA California in Home Depot two months ago, this plant were being sold from Booman Nursery. It came in a new cube soft vinyl package. Well, it was practically dead and negotiated down to 50¢.

They were also selling ‘Red Line’ Venus flytrap.

Also purchase a Nep, maybe it’s a ventrata or ventricosa but the leaves & urns look quite different hopefully it’s a new species. But then again, I may be cluttering my collection with another plant I already have.
Unknown Nep

Usually I don’t make post only for one area but for the growers here, this may be a chance to increase their collection.

Cheers!

Thanks for the heads-up. I'd like to get a gypsicola and another medusina.

Another thing, especially for beginners: Check out 99 Cents Only stores if you have them in your area. A couple weeks ago I saw some very healthy D. capensis on sale there. But you have to get 'em fast, because the stores usually don't water them. A week later they'll be nearly dead. And just today I was in a 99 Cents that had just gotten a shipment of Sarracenias.

Hi,

Tried going to the 99cents store, obviously they may already disposed of them if they have died in their store. Last year, the 99cents store sold VFT.

Oh well, better luck next time. Would have like to have seen what type of sarracenias they sold.

This is an update of this post for the 2 unidentified pings I bought on November of last year.

The ping I called "type 1" is Pinguicula gypsicola and the one I called "type 2" is Pinguicula moctezumae. I.d. them by their flower as well as leaf characteristics.

Sorry no pics of flowers cause in my attempt to take pics to post. Knock them down from the table & landed upside down, basically mushing them good. Plants are okay & looks they will recover but massed them up pretty good.

I better check my Lowes' out. I could use another medusina!

@petiolaris

Either Lows or Home Depot, just keep an eye for CP sold by Gubler Orchids. They now & then sell rare plants, so keep an eye on that particular company.

This is not the 1st time I mooshed my plant when dropping them by accident & the pot landing upside down. I did that to my poor N. alata, doing fine now. Dang I wanted to take a pic of my to Mexican pings, but massed them up pretty bad, flowers & leaves. But they have good root system so they'll recover. :-p

I checked the 2 closest Lowes and one had 3 stale pitcher plants while the other had nothing. What a disappointment.

HunterKiller: Would you be into a trade for the medusina?
