Darkening Base

Hi all. I always feel like I get all nervous about something, and it turns out to be nothing, but I dunno about this one. My n. x Velvet seems to maybe have slowed down growth a bit, even though it is receiving about the same amount of light each day . Anyways, I have noticed that the base of the plant is darkening in color, you can see in the pictures the color it is turning. Should I be worried? I moved some of the substrate around and checked to see if there were any bugs immediately around the base under the soil, and saw none. I'm only watering 2-3 times a week, and not much water at all. It all just runs out the bottom of the pot, so just enough to keep the soil moist. The second picture illustrates it better, as there aren't any dead leaves around the base.
