when venus' flytraps are dormant, they hardly ever close their traps at a faste rate. since days are colder and shorter, they hardly get any photoperiod.

During dormancy, flytraps slow down on their growth or stop completely. it's best to avoid feeding them. Yes, even as dormant, they still have leaves but they are smaller along with the traps. patience is required.

Venus' flytraps grow again around late february, as days become longer and warmer. If your nephew and neice get a flytrap, it's best to grow it under lights meanwhile.

I would also recommend the purchase of an excellent beginner book called, Savage Garden, by Peter D'Amato. That would go a long way toward guiding them.

it was pretty cool seeing Peter D' Amato in this program called "The Most Extreme" in the animal planet channel. He seemed to talk with much knowledge about all of his plants. specially when he was demonstratin how the vfts close their traps and how nepenthes digest their prey as they fall into the pits of the pitcher.. and the digestive juices would digest its prey just like a stomach digests food :P

sorry for the delayed reply. i was out of town this weekend.

I saw Peter D' Amato in that animal planet show last week around Wednesday or tuesday.. that episode was new back then too. I'm pretty sure that they will repeat the same Epidose.

The show is called "The Most Extreme" in the Animal Planet.

The description for that episode says "the horticulturals of the animal kingdom" or something. :P
