Unknown Seed from Gsb/HP Swap

Posted by ncrescue 7 (My Page) on

I have a pk. of seeds from the last swap at Panera's in HP. I carefully printed what the donor called it, Cypena coelestis, but now I cannot find that any place on the internet, so it apparently is NOT the correct name. And, I cannot remember who brought it. Can anyone out there suggest what it might be?

there's and iris family plant that pdn sells that starts with something very like cypena- let me think more and post back. Cypella? I think that's it....
yep- cypella coelestis it is! It's a lovely blue flower- really nice. Striking blooms- drought tolerant. Wnts a good bit of sun to bloom well. There's a yellow version in the family, too.

I've always thought they should do some refining on commenilina- because it has one of the prettiest blues found in nature- but it's basically a common weed. I've had some variegated leafed ones come up and i always leave those, hoping i'll get more each year.

Thanks for the advice. I will go ahead and sow them although the temps right now make me think it is fall. Cold and windy here today! I know commenilina...there are native ones but most are those Asiatic day flowers. Pretty, but can spread too much.

I've grown Cypella coelestis from seed. It didn't require any sort of special treatment like cold stratification or scarification. I think they sprouted within a month. Mine were just a handful of snagged seeds from a pod on a plant growing in a public garden (though I had seen the plant for sale at Plant Delights). I was at that swap but I didn't bring those seeds. Those seedlings are getting ready to bloom now after almost two years of growth. They are one of my favorite summer bloomers; nice tall simple pale blue irises that will bloom off and on throughout the year.
